Use Dry Wood
The less smoke produced from your fire, the better for the safety of your health and your home; that’s why we tell our customers to only ever use dry wood. Wet wood produces much more smoke and will therefore also produce more build-up of soot in your chimney, which is the last thing you want! If you can get hold of well-aged dry wood, this will be even better for your fireplace.
Chimney Maintenance
Chimney maintenance is extremely important when keeping your fireplace safe. You should have routine cleaning done to clean out the soot from your chimney to prevent too much build-up; this will help to prevent your fire from producing too much smoke. Chimney maintenance can also include having your chimney checked for any blockages that could be preventing smoke from escaping, for example, birds nests.
Keep Flammable Items Away
This one is pretty straightforward; if you want your fireplace to be safe, don’t put any flammable items near it! This could include furniture, newspapers, drapes, etc. Prevent these from catching on fire by keeping them well away.
Keep an Eye on It
If you’ve got a fire burning, don’t leave it unattended! Make sure you’re always around whilst it’s burning to avoid any dangers from occurring. If you’re going to bed, make sure the fire has completely died before leaving it; you’d be surprised by how many issues occur from people not doing this. Never leave children around a burning fire and ensure that you have a fireguard in front of it.
Install Smoke Detectors
If you’ve got a fireplace, make sure you get a smoke detector installed in your property; we also recommend getting a carbon monoxide detector for extra safety. Make sure you test them every month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
